Why losing weight is harder with insulin resistance, which way of eating he...
Six years on, Kevin and Rosemarie still follow their Metabolic Balance plans. They tell Cherry Wills what made the difference between a plan and a diet.
Kevin and Rosemarie started Metabolic Balance in February 2019. Kevin was managing reflux and diverticulitis and knew he was carrying extra weight. Rosemarie, then 62, was around 20 kg above the weight she wanted to be, low in mood, and still dealing with menopausal symptoms and joint discomfort. In this episode of Metabolic Balance Stories, they talk to Cherry Wills, who is both their coach and the host of the podcast, about what has kept them on their plans ever since. Kevin lost between 8 and 10 kg across his first phases, and Rosemarie close to 20 kg.
Their experience is personal, but their story raises a question most people have before they start: what happens after the first results are in?

1. A plan can become a trusted framework rather than a temporary phase.
Six years in, the couple still use their plans as their general guide for day to day life. Rosemarie puts the difference in plain terms: a diet to her is temporary, while a nutritional eating plan is something stable and long-term. She says she cannot see that changing for her.
2. Much of what they value is what they learned.
Both describe knowing how their own bodies respond now: which foods suit them, which ones suit them only occasionally, and how quickly they notice when they have drifted. As Rosemarie puts it, you learn when your body is happy and when it is not, and then you have the understanding and power to make the right choice for any occasion. Holidays, Christmas, and other celebrations are part of a good life, and so is it wonderful knowing what to do afterwards.
3. A personalized plan can be adapted when circumstances change.
A few months after starting, Rosemarie had a serious fall and spent two weeks in hospital, followed by a long recovery during which she could manage only pureed and then soft food. Her plan was adjusted around what she could actually eat, including different protein sources and portions, so that she was still nourished while she healed.
4. Personalization is also why their plans are not for someone else.
Friends and family noticed the change in them and asked about it, so Rosemarie shared how she tells people about Metabolic Balance and how to get their own plan, because no one else can pick up her plan and expect the same result. At the same time, the structure travels: last year the couple enjoyed a three week, 7,200 km road trip with a camper trailer. They continued to plan, buying their protein and vegetables as they went and had a great trip!
